Will Smith’s History of Celebrity Beef | Marca

The actor stole the show at the Oscars on Sunday night for all the wrong reasons. Smith slapped Chris Rock square in the face after the comedian made a comment about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. His aggressive and shocking display was almost Oscar worthy in itself: perhaps it will be shortlisted for next year’s Golden Raspberry Awards, a parody award show honouring the worst of cinematic under-achievements.

Rapper and music producer P. Diddy had his say on the “beef” which took place at acting’s most prestigious awards show. According to “Diddy”, the two stars have resolved any issues. He spoke to Vanity Fair in the Oscars after party and said, “It’s not a problem. It’s over. I can confirm that. It’s all love, they’re brothers”.

Will Smith took to Instagram on Monday to publicly apologise to Chris Rock. He said: “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Long lasting beef with Rock

It turns out that this isn’t the first altercation Smith and his wife have had with comedian. In fact, the trio have a fairly long history of tension. Rock has been guilty of making jokes about the couple in the past: in 2016 he directed a joke at Pinkett’s expensive, mocking her boycott of the Oscars because of the lack of diversity. “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I was not invited. That’s not an invitation I’d turn down,” he said. In 2018, he also publicly mocked what he perceived to be the excessively open and honest nature of the couple’s relationship.

On Sunday, Rock went one step further, making a joke about Jada’s lack of hair, which is now know to be caused by a medical condition. Rock later claimed he was unaware of this. Jada has previously opened up about her decision to shave her head, after suffering from alopecia.

Eminem Beef

This was not the first time Will has had high-profile beef. Back in the late 90’s at the height of his music career, he had a fiery verbal exchange with Eminem. It took place at the 1998 MTV VMA awards, and the feud stemmed from the comments Smith made when he accepted the award for Best Male Video for his hit song “Miami”. In his acceptance speech, Smith gloated that not once in his song did he use bad language or curse. Many people considered this to be a dig at other artists, specifically fellow nominee that year Eminem. The following year, Eminem wiped the floor at the at the awards show as he picked up several accolades for his LP The Slim Shady. His response to Will’s comments: “Will Smith doesn’t have to cuss to sell records. Well, I do, So f*ck him. And f*ck you too.”

The beef even wove itself into both artist’s music, as the two of them threw insults back and forth in a childish cussing battle. In the official video of Forgot About Dre, Eminem’s character, drunken and disorderly, talks with an ironic tone and a smirk on his face about how he was “listening to my Will Smith CD when I saw all the flames”. This was clearly a shot fired by Eminem at his fellow rapper.

Smith’s response came in his 2005 song Mr Nice Guy: “Look at the eyes, got the look…Of a survivor, husband, father…Dissed by Eminem but didn’t bother him…Yup well he classy…Big Will just get another 20 mill’ walk right past E…”.

Despite his public self-portrayal as a nice guy, the actor has revealed that there is a darker side to his personality. Smith has openly talked in his autobiography, as well as in his wife’s Youtube channel Red Table Talks about the issues he had with Tupac. He has spoken of the overwhelming jealousy he had over his wife’s relationship with the Californian rapper, which was a major cause of his marriage struggles.

Feud with Fresh Prince co-star Janet Hubert-Whitten

It’s no secret that Smith had issues with the actress who played Aunt Viv,Janet Hubert-Whitten. She made extremely strong claims about her fellow actor, claiming that he was responsible for ruining her career. The situation on set got so tense that she was eventually replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid who played the role for the final three seasons. It’s reported that her attitude is what led to the termination of her contract after the third season. This was Smith’s response to her being fired: “She has basically gone from a quarter of a million dollars a year to nothing. She’s mad now but she’s been mad all along. She said once, ‘I’ve been in the business for 10 years and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.” Hubert-Whitten’s response: “I’d never do anything with an a**hole like Will Smith.

It appears Smith is no stranger to an argument. This year’s Oscars were evidence of that. His emotions got the better of him and his reckless reaction will go down as one of the worst and most shocking moments in the history of showbiz. The Oscars belonged to Will Smith but in the end, for all the wrong reasons.
