TikTok was in some hot water last week for allegedly stealing a woman’s voice and turning it into the app’s default text to speech bot voice. After quickly changing the voice to be something super realistic and arguably a little creepier, people began looking for other services online that could turn their text into speech. The internet stumbled upon something that offered way more than they were asking. Enter: Uberduck.ai.

What started as a project that was just for fun in late 2020, is now a fully fledged viral sound and tool for making funny videos and memes. Uberduck allows anyone who logs in with their Discord, to turn any text into speech with a library of celebrity voices to choose from.

Here’s a list of some of the most notable celebrity voices that you can make say anything you want:

  • Mickey Mouse
  • Patrick Stewart
  • Kanye West
  • Nicki Minaj
  • Spongebob Squarepants
  • Peter Griffin
  • Wii Sports Announcer
  • Jimmy Neutron
  • Weird Al
  • Jacksepticeye
  • J.F.K.
  • Scooby-Doo!
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Charlie Brown
  • Mario
  • Jay-Z
  • Kermit the Frog
  • Buzz Lightyear
  • Markiplier

What separates Uberduck from other AI text to speech bots, is that it’s built for and by the AI community. After joining the official Discord server, anyone looking to make and upload their own celebrity voice can find instructions and other helpful people who are willing to make your dream of Guy Fieri rapping to Tyler the Creator’s “Earfquake” a reality.

Some people, like Jacksepticeye, whose voices are being used have discovered the website and have reacted mostly positive, so far.

The combination of TikTok changing their in app text to speech voice and the discovery of this website led to a trend where people were pretending that their TikTok voice was stuck as a celebrity. Especially since many people do not like the new voice that TikTok defaults to.

Luckily, this bot isn’t at all perfect with some text leading to a malfunction where the output sounds like a dictionary being blended.

It is a little scary to see how close the internet is to making videos and audios that are deepfaked well enough that we cannot tell the difference between reality and memeality. This time period in deep fake and AI ability might be looked back upon in the same way that cell phones of the early 2000’s were. It’s a space to watch for sure.
