Before they face the cameras at the iconic steps of The Met Fifth Avenue, celebrities attending the Met Gala brave the photographers gathered outside The Mark, the legendary hotel on New York’s Upper East Side. The hotel, that hosts over 70 celebrities, their entourage and the creative teams from some of the most iconic fashion houses known to man – from Versace and Dior, to Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga, amongst others – is closed to outside guests from the day before to make sure everyone from Timothée Chalamet to Blake Lively can get ready in peace, privacy and style.
While Kim Kardashian’s 2019 Thierry Mugler turn might be one of the most iconic looks spotted coming out of The Mark recently, an unspoken tradition calls for Vogue US editor-in-chief and the force behind the Met Gala, Anna Wintour, to be the first to step out of the candy-striped lobby and face over a 100 paparazzi camera lined-up to capture the first glimpses of fashion’s biggest night.
Housed at the corner of Madison Avenue and 77th Street on New York’s Upper East Side, the hotel was reimagined and given a new identity for the 21st century in 2009. Drawing on the expertise of an extraordinary group of talents – foremost among them the designer Jacques Grange, three-Michelin starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and celebrated hairstylist Frédéric Fekkai, the hotel’s irresistible blend of old-world charm, modernity and privacy have made it a sought-after address for lovers of refined living from all walks of life.
Only steps away from Central Park and a short walking distance from New York’s Museum Mile, The Mark features 106 rooms, 46 suites and a penthouse – all of which serve celebrities attending the event. On the day of the Met Gala, the hotel’s two elevators go up and down 1,537 times and in 2021, 200 coffees were delivered between 6am – 12pm of the big day!
The Theme And Celebrities At The 2022 Met Gala
On Monday May 2, the 2022 Met Gala will unveil the second volume in a two-part Costume Institute exhibition centred on Americana. Across 13 of the American period rooms in the museum, In America: An Anthology of Fashion will explore the evolution of American style as well as the contributions of a diverse mix of individual tailors, dress-makers, and designers. Could this year’s hosts Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin-Manuel Miranda be amongst the brightest faces leaving The Mark tomorrow evening for the most important red carpet of all? We can’t wait to find out. themarkhotel.com
