Some of South Africa’s favourite stars fastened their shoelaces and donned their bibs to compete in the annual Celebrity Netball Face-off. Why? All in the name of encouraging young people to take part in the sport.

With Youth Month well underway, telecoms company Telkom rallied up some well-known faces for the match hosted at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria on Wednesday. The celebrity face-off was streamed online in the spirit of “leaving no person behind”.

The teams were led by radio and TV personality Khutso Theledi and social media sensation Lasizwe Dambuza.

Netball SA president Cecilia Molokwane applauded Telkom’s work in the sport, saying things had changed for netball since the partnership. “The partnership has given South Africa a chance to compete at a high level. The intensity at the Telkom Netball League is at its best. The young girls need to look at [captain of the South African netball team] Bongiwe Msomi, who came from the township, and believe that they will make it.”

“We need to use the legends we have to encourage the young girls to want to play netball, it’s time to change the narrative.

“We want to change the life of that one girl and boy. We want them to feel free, play netball and do what they love most,” she said.

The winning team will donate a netball court to the MH Baloyi Secondary School in Winterveldt, Pretoria.
