FLINT – The legendary Jack Nicklaus stole the show in the inaugural Ally Challenge Celebrity Shootout two years ago when he chipped in from 55 feet to win $15,000 for charity.
Now, Nicklaus will be returning for the second Celebrity Shootout and he’ll be joined by two additional Hall of Famers – fellow major champion Lee Trevino and Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo. A fourth celebrity yet to be determined will join them Aug. 28 at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.
The four players will be divided into two-man teams for the nine-hole event that will be played during the second round of the 54-hole Ally Challenge. It will begin on the 10th hole after the final group of the second round has made the turn during the $2-million PGA Tour Champions event.
Nicklaus’ chip-in in 2019 gave him and partner Kid Rock the victory over former Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg and musician Dierks Bentley. They won $18,000 from the $25,000 purse.
The purse for this year’s Celebrity Shootout has not been finalized yet.
“I look forward to returning to Michigan and the fans at Warwick Hills, and reconnecting with my friends at Ally,” Nicklaus said in a statement. “It’s been a couple of years since we did this, but I recall how kind and appreciative the galleries were.
“Most important, we raised significant money for charity, and hope to do so once again. I don’t play much golf these days, but I am certain we will have a lot of fun. And if I can negotiate eight shots from Lee for the nine holes, we will have even more fun.”
Nicklaus, 81, has won a record 18 major championships, has 73 PGA Tour titles on his golfing resume and won 120 tournament titles worldwide.
Trevino, 81, is a longtime foe dating back to when he joined the PGA Tour in 1966. He has 29 PGA Tour victories and has won six major championships. He has also captured 29 PGA Tour Champions events, the third-most in history.
Like Nicklaus, he played at Warwick Hills when it was host to the PGA Tour’s Buick Open.
“I am thrilled to be coming back to Warwick Hills and joining my good friend, Jack Nicklaus,” Trevino said in a statement. “We are going to have a great day on Saturday, August 28th, it will be fun to be with all the incredible Michigan golf fans.”
Izzo, 66, is preparing for his 27th season as Michigan State’s head coach. He led the Spartans to the 2000 NCAA Championships, one of eight Final Four appearances for MSU under Izzo, who was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.
Izzo played in last year’s Ally Challenge pro-am.
“It’s a great honor to be invited to play in the Celebrity Shootout … with great names in golf like Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino, and I’m really looking forward to it,” Izzo said in a statement. “The Ally Challenge is a tremendous event in the state of Michigan that will raise funds for charities in the greater Flint area, which has always been close to my heart.”
Fans can bid for an opportunity to serve as a caddie for one of the four players in the Celebrity Shootout by going to the Ally Challenge website.
The $2-million tournament will also have an Inside The Ropes Experience where fans can watch the action up close and personal. More information on that is also on the Ally Challenge website.
The fourth Ally Challenge will be held Aug. 23-29. Jim Furyk is the defending champion.
