Many of our most beloved stars, from public figures to entertainers, have used their platforms to commemorate, celebrate and educate others throughout the Juneteenth weekend. Here are some messages that stood out.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama celebrated Juneteenth by posting a video message urging Americans to register to vote in the upcoming November elections.
“Today is about coming together and honoring those before us who reached for progress, who helped build this country with their bare hands, who marched, fought, and protested—who did everything they could so that we might have a voice and a vote,” the former First Lady said.
She ended the video by telling the American people to check their registration status at whenweallvote.org.
Lizzo also took to Instagram Sunday– the “Truth Hurts” singer covered “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” a song that has become a Black Anthem since its conception in 1900.
“Happy Juneteenth y’all,” Lizzo wrote. “Every year I hold a Juneteenth fundraiser where I donate to, signal boost, and buy from black businesses. This is our 3rd year and we’ve raised nearly half a million dollars for black businesses and organizations.”
In the post, the 34-year-old directed her followers to lizzolovesyou.com so they can give back as well.
Tamar Braxton, Kerry Washington and Mariah Carey also honored the monumental day.
