Cruise ships are back on the water after the pandemic grounded the industry for two years, but its recovery faces challenges as COVID-19 case counts rise across the country.
Among the first people to experience the industry’s new protocols is State Representative John Mizuno, who is aboard the Celebrity Millennium, the second ship in the United States to cruise from Seattle to Alaska. It is a fully vaccinated 7-day cruise, meaning all crew and passengers are all fully vaccinated.
Rep. Mizuno joined Good Morning Hawaii to talk about the strict safety protocols and how COVID made its way onto the ship.
Protocols were put to the test just a day into their journey, when a fully vaccinated passenger developed flu-like symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19.
Rep. Mizuno said the traveler was isolated and no one else has tested positive — a relief for everyone on board
“It was actually upbeat, and the captain confirmed that he said that shows that our safety protocol is working,” Rep. Mizuno said. “Everyone’s looking at it, because if you had an outbreak of 30, 40, 50 cases of COVID, it would probably stop the industry for their summer, and they wouldn’t be able to salvage it. So this is a very important cruise.”
Alaska Public Media reported the passenger was transported from the ship while it was in port in Juneau over the weekend.
