Residents in Thomasville are getting used to a few new faces about town: Academy Award-winning actors Dustin Hoffman, Sissy Spacek and Amy Adams — three of the latest Hollywood stars spotted in the South Georgia town that’s become a film-shooting hotspot.
Hoffman and Spacek are starring in the film “Sam and Kate,” written and directed by Darren Le Gallo, who is married to Adams. Also on the cast list are the stars’ children, Jake Hoffman and Schuyler Fisk, in supporting roles, according to Variety.
Filming began in late February and is set to wrap up by March 25, said Bonnie Hayes, the director of tourism development for the city of Thomasville.
“He was super nice — not arrogant or unapproachable at all,” said Caleb Brown, the owner of Jonah’s Fish & Grits, about Hoffman’s surprise stop at the restaurant in early March. “He made sure everyone got the right shots if they asked for a picture. It was pretty remarkable.”

Brown said filmmakers shot some of Hoffman’s scenes directly across the street from his downtown Thomasville restaurant.
“It’s always fun to see these things up close,” he said, adding that celebrity encounters have become more common in recent years before rattling off a short list that included Mel Gibson.
Spacek and Academy Award-winning actress Amy Adams, who has a production credit on the film, also surprised customers and staff in the last few days.
“I don’t get star struck, but I have some employees who turn into a puddle of gooey mush,” Brown laughed.
And, while he remembers all their orders, he has no plans of renaming dishes after the stars that ordered them.
Photos of Hoffman in selfies and group pictures around Thomasville have spread through local social media pages.
“From what we’ve been hearing, he’s really enjoying himself in Thomasville,” said Hayes, who as Thomasville’s film liaison helps find locations for film shoots.
Hayes has witnessed a rise of film shoots taking place in Thomasville and said it is in large part because of Thomasville Pictures, a boutique studio company started by a filmmaker and Thomasville native, Allen Cheney.
In 2021, Thomasville Pictures brought three movies to the south Georgia town: “Bandit” starring Mel Gibson and Josh Duhamel; “One Way” with Machine Gun Kelly and Kevin Bacon; and “Supercell” that sees Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche in leading roles.

So far, there have been two productions in Thomasville this year, “Sam and Kate” and a psychological thriller.
Hayes said she also assists many Florida State University film students find film locations around Thomasville for their thesis projects.
“A lot of people here want to bring movies to Thomasville and make it a film hub like Covington or Senoia,” she said. “It’s great to see the attention the city is getting on the big screen.”
