Substance abuse is already pretty scary when you are a regular citizen, but trying to handle that as a celebrity has to be one of the most difficult endeavours you can embark yourself into. Johnny Depp’s history with substances is long and has an origin that we might never know. However, we can easily pin point the defining moments that could’ve accentuated his relationship with certain substances. In the trial against Amber Heard, his therapist reported that Johnny Depp has been struggling with benzodiazepines, stimulants, alcohol and opioids. Pretty much all of those substances can kill you at any given moment, which is why investigating the reason for taking them is always an option. First, we will go back to the ’90s decade when Depp ran the legendary nightclub known as ‘The Viper Room’.

It all may have starting with River Phoenix’s death.

Back in the ’90s decade, Johnny Depp decided to open a bohemian-style nightclub that he names ‘The Viper Room’. He became even more famous than before due to all the theme parties he organized alongside his partner. But tragedy struck him as up and coming actor River Phoenix tragically died of an overdose right at the club’s entrance. Although this wasn’t his fault by any stretch of the imagination, Depp certainly got backlash from the media and this might’ve pushed him down the deeper end. But there’s another encounter in his life that possibly pushed him even further down the deep end.

Enter Hunter S. Thompson.

River Phoenix’s death was in October 1993, Johnny Depp met legendary writer Hunter S. Thompson in 1994. To those who don’t know, Depp played Hunter in ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’. If you’ve seen that movie, you know how extreme the writer was with his substance abuse. It’s impossible to not hold him as a major influence on Johnny Depp from the moment both of them met. When Thompson passed away, his last wish was fulfilled by Johnny Depp. On the ‘Graham Norton Show’, Johnny revealed Hunter asked for his ahses to be launched into the stratosphere on a rocket and Depp was the only one crazy-enough to do that. Losing such a dear friend who was also a major culture figure in drug use, had to be impactful for Johnny.
