A Celebrity ‘Wordle’ Spin-Off Is Here, And It’s Deviously Brilliant – Forbes

Finally, a real guess-the-celebrity ‘Wordle’ spin-off has arrived.

The creators of one of the fastest-growing Wordle spin-offs–the soccer-themed Who Are Ya?–know they’re onto a very clever concept. Rather than put all their eggs into one basket, they’re now diversifying the daily experience into something altogether more devious and addictive, opening it up to one of the biggest casual audiences worldwide.

Who Are Ya?, which started off as a Wordle alternative firmly focused on association football before delving into all sorts of popular competitive pastimes around the world, is finally offering an alternative for those who aren’t so hot on sport: a celebrity version.

The original Who Are Ya? became a runaway hit with a well-balanced five-criteria system. The debut release tasked players with identifying a soccer star who plays in one of Europe’s major top flights, based on their nationality, league, team, position, and age.

Following slight adjustments to this simple but effective formula, British co-creators and brothers Daniel and Michael Rose have adapted the game so people can guess a celebrity in eight attempts, using five metrics: the “type” of celebrity (e.g. movie star, musician), plus their gender, nationality, net worth, and age.

While it’s quite a big ask to get celebrity Who Are Ya? correct in just a couple of tries–there’s a lot more room for error unless you’re hot on Forbes’ Highest-Paid Entertainers list (and then some)–the Roses have once again included automatic suggestions, which pop up once the player has typed two or more letters; the list of celebrities, too, seems relatively limited–for now.

As another bonus, there’s the opportunity to receive a heavily blurred and recolored image of the celebrity in question: a useful crutch that gradually brings the day’s celebrity into focus with each failed guess. However, chances are they’ll still look like Marvel’s Yondu or Avatar’s Na’vi for the first three or four attempts. Those who want a purer, more punishing experience can opt to go without it entirely.

The Roses, who have found nothing but excitement in the prospect of joining forces to create a project together after years of working in similar industries, have seen their Wordle alternative explode in popularity. Who Are Ya? now receives over one million visits a day in May, after attracting over 25 million page views in April. New audiences continue to be uncovered, too; last month, the game was streamed to two million Portuguese-speaking viewers of popular casual Twitch streamer Casimito, the presenter of TNT Sports Brasil.

However, Who Are Ya? continues to specialize in sports, and there really does seem to be something for everyone; alongside soccer, the site now offers guessing games for players in the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, PGA, F1, and even international cricket–while more will undoubtedly arrive in the future.
